The New Address To Research And AI Divisions Of Google: “Google AI”

Every huge tech firm is an AI firm nowadays, however, none more so than the search giant Google. To emphasize the point previous to its I/O developers conference, the Google Research division has been rebranded by the firm as Google AI, mirroring the centrality of AI to the future of the company.

Publicizing the news in a blog post, the search giant stated that the rebranding is to “better mirror [its] promise” to incorporating AI into a number of services. It comes after an organizational restructuring done last month that witnessed AI product development separating from the search efforts of Google and Jeff Dean taking the controls of the new division.

A freshly refurbished Google AI homepage also calls attention to more than merely the consumer products of the company, underlining newly published studies in topics such as astronomy & health and open-source tools utilized by the AI community across the world, such as Tensor Flow, the machine learning framework.

This focus on community and research slightly contrasts with that of Microsoft that has also been thrusting its AI credentials at its Build conference this week. However, for Microsoft, the point has been more relating to AI morality and ethics, with the firm introducing a new $25 Million AI program for Accessibility fund to build technology for individuals with disabilities. On the similar line, Google also does ample work in the AI ethics field; however, it would be interesting to witness these 2 tech world giants attempting to distinguish their point on the same topic.

In a correspondence to investors, a few days back, Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google cautioned of the dangers posed by AI, such as biased algorithms, misinformation, and job destruction. He also titled AI “the most noteworthy improvement in computing in my existence.” The rebranding by Google of its research division impels that point home.
